Joseph Bloeckman

Anthony's enemy. Kind of.

Bloeckman met Gloria through Gloria's father, and instantly became attracted to Gloria. Gloria's parents resented this relationship wholeheartedly, however. Bloeckman also had proposed to Gloria once, but Gloria refused. Their relationship would remain a friendship throughout the story, but Anthony was convinced Gloria would commit adultery when they were alone together (I mean lets face it..they did like each other at one point...right?)

Bloeckman is also mildly successful, a name well known in the movie business, and given that Gloria wanted to be the next-big-thing, who knows if Gloria really cared about Bloeckman other than his occupation.

He's described as being much older, and extremely close-minded and conservative according to Anthony. Bloeckman does not dance, thinks Adam Patch is a fine example for an American, and would criticize Anthony every chance he could get in the first book of the novel.

After Anthony and Gloria got married and moved to the country, Bloeckman would appear a few years later, and made it his mission to help Gloria get into the movie business. This never became a thing for Gloria, however, because by the time she made an attempt at acting, she ultimately lost her chance because she was too old for a role.
