Book One: Chapter Three
-
Dick tells his aunt that he is currently working on a book titled, "The Demon Lover".
-
Mrs. Gilbert excitedingly tells Dick that she met up with a palmist the other day and was told that her nephew would be wildly successful. (Fortune tellers spit nothing but the truth ok...)
-
Dick changes the subject swiftly and confesses that he thinks Anthony is in love with Gloria, but Gloria is way too wild and uncontrollable, and if Gloria doesn't marry Anthony she's a nut.
-
Mrs. Gilbert agrees, and goes on about how mentally and emotionally abusive Gloria is towards every man she had ever dated, and tells her nephew the story of Gloria running away to Europe with her then-boyfriend's father.
-
Dick has already heard a majority of these stories though so it's really not headlining news or anything...
-
-
Then Mrs. Gilbert talks about how "cold" her daughter is now. She recently refused to go to another college dance, and no longer wants to deal with college boys (Goodbye Ivy league boys! Ya ain't worth it!)
-
-
Gloria then enters the house with her friends Rachael Jerryl and Muriel Kane.
-
Muriel is described, throughout this entire scene, as being very loud and obnoxious, but Dick sort of enjoys her character.
-
Gloria proposes having a dinner-date in a week with Rachael, Muriel, Dick, Maury Noble, Anthony, and Joseph Bloeckman.
-
Dick asks who Joseph Bloeckman is, and Gloria tells him that he's the "moving-picture man", the Vice President of 'Films Par Excellence' whose done a lot of business with her dad.
-
-
The scene switches over to Anthony and Geraldine at his apartment.
-
Geraldine tells Anthony that drinking too much is bad for his health, but Anthony really couldn't care if he died from alcohol poisoning in the near future, so he fixes Geraldine another cocktail.
-
Geraldine finds out that Anthony is indeed related to Adam Patch, and asks how being his grandson is like.
-
Anthony confesses that the man is absolutely brutal, uninteresting and their relationship isn't really THAT great.
-
-
Geraldine then asks if every woman wants to marry him because of his rich grandfather, but Anthony tells Geraldine that he has no desire in marriage.
-
After about five cocktails they get all lovey-dovey and Geraldine assures Anthony that he'll definitely get married one day.
-
Anthony then tells Geraldine that she's a little idiot.
-
-
-
A week has passed, and Anthony, Bloeckman, Dick, and Maury are standing outside of a restaurant waiting for the girls to show up.
-
Already from the start Anthony doesn't care for Bloeckman much. First, he tells Anthony that his grandfather is a prime example of being an American (and Anthony greatly resents his grandfather.) Also, he criticizes Anthony for being a Harvard graduate; mentioning that Princeton had beaten Harvard's hockey team numerous times before.
-
Once the girls arrive Maury can't take his eyes off Muriel.
-
While waiting for their food, everyone decided to get up and dance to some ragtime (except Bloeckman.)
-
We also learn that Bloeckman is attracted to Gloria but not much is said about whether or not she knows. As Bloeckman is sitting at the table by himself he "...watched her, and knew that presently she would cease dancing and come back to sit on his left hand. He hoped that she would hurry. The oyesters had been standing some minutes. Meanwhile Anthony, who had been placed on Gloria's left hand, was dancing with her, always in a certain fourth on the floor" (81).
-
Love triangle? Hmm?
-
-
At one point Gloria and Anthony dance over to the door and decide to take a walk to the nearest drugstore.
-
Gloria confesses to Anthony that the reason why she needs to go to the drugstore is because she needs some gumdrops to prevent her from biting her nails out of nervousness. (Ok..) (Cute...) (She's great at dates..)
-
After buying these gumdrops Anthony suggests that they take a cab back, and while this cab pulls up Anthony looks at Gloria and kisses her all of a sudden. Gloria went blank.
-
-
-
Since their kiss Anthony was practically whipped and called her house 4 times on a Sunday. Gloria never picked up.
-
Finally, Anthony gets in touch with Gloria and they go out for a walk just to chat, but it was too cold and Gloria didn't like the fact that Anthony walks way too fast. So they walk over to her house to talk.
-
We find out that Bloeckman doesn't like Anthony (like, absolutely despises him) and Anthony believes Bloeckman is love with Gloria. It also doesn't help that Gloria told Bloeckman about the kiss, but apparently he took it like a champ.
-
Eventually Gloria gets irritated about this entire conversation and calls it "uninteresting" and Anthony asks "Aren't you interested in anything except yourself?" (93). Gloria replies with "Not much" (93). (TRUUUUUU).
-
At this point Anthony did not enjoy her company and hated her selfishness. But as soon as Gloria smiled, all hatred he had towards her was automatically stripped away.
-
-
Anthony then kisses her once again, and tells her "This is all. It's been very rare to have known you, very strange and wonderful. But this wouldn't so - and wouldn't last" (94). Gloria replies with, "A woman should be able to kiss a man beautifully and romatically without any desire to be either his wife or his mistress" (94).
-
However, after an hour of their make-out sesh, Anthony leans in for another kiss but Gloria refuses andtells him she doesn't want that..
-
He then asks "Won't you kiss me Gloria?" (95) but Gloria kept refusing so they both get annoyed with each other and Anthony decides to leave. Gloria cries out, "Good-by you ass!" (96).
-
-
-
-
But even after the outcome of their last encounter, Anthony was still madly in love with Gloria. He also felt that Gloria had been playing with the idea of possibly marrying Bloeckman, and that idea drove him insane.
-
Since then he decided to take a long break from Gloria and then pursue her again, but about a couple of weeks later he see's Gloria once again and notices she cut her hair into a bob (before it became fashionabale.) They decide to hang out for an entire day, and Anthony's love for Gloria grew stronger.
-
He decided to call her up the next day just to say good morning, and then he told her he loved her. She just responded with, "I-I'm glad" (106).
