Book Two: Chapter Three
-
The text opens up in script format.
-
Fred Paramore, Anthony's old friend from college, comes for an unexpected visit.
-
It just so happens though, that this visit includes meeting Gloria, Muriel, Rachael, Rachael's husband, old classmates Maury and Dick at the gray house.
-
Gloria then pulls Anthony aside and tells him to control his drinking, his spending habits on their guests (because paying their cab rides and their broken bottles isn't worth it as excess generosities), and his attentiveness towards Rachael (because Gloria and Rachael's husband don't like it very much.)
-
Maury then offers Paramore a drink, but Paramore says he'll only take one, in which Maury finds absurd and shoves more drinks at him.
-
Muriel then decides to move the furniture back and have a little dance party. Everyone at this point is drinking and partying and having a lively time.
-
Rachael approaches Anthony and asks if Gloria had told him to keep away, in which Anthony lied and said no. It's pretty easy to tell that Rachael and Anthony are slightly attracted to each other, but nothing is done upon it.
-
But just when one unexpected arrival wasn't enough, in the midst of all this consumption of alcohol - Adam Patch decided to pay an unexpected visit with his assistant, Shuttlesworth. And being that both Adam Patch and Shuttlesworth are avid reformers who believe in prohibition wholeheartedly, this was not a prime for Anthony. They left after seeing the embarassment they walked into.
-
-
A couple of days after the incident with Adam Patch, Gloria and Anthony began to question how much Patch hated his grandson, and because Anthony and Gloria are waiting for the old man to die - they're scared about what he's going to do with his will.
-
Also, Gloria tells Anthony that if he treats a woman the same way he treated Rachael the other night, she'll leave him at once.
-
Then, the summer ended . And just like that, the Patch's packed up their belongings to go back to the city.
-
Gloria notices Anthony's stamp collection and asks why he's keeping such junk, but Anthony just tells her he was flipping through it at the apartment and didn't want to store it.
-
-
Even after coming home to NYC (concrete jungle where dreams are made of...) Anthony and Gloria still fought. And just when their fighting was in some sort of peace, Gloria would ruin it with some unecessary comment, like, "I wonder where Bleockman's been this summer" (230).
-
Anthony has been trying to secure back the lease to his old apartment, but it hasn't been going so hot.
-
They realized that if they sell more bonds, they could reach the price of the proposed lease, but it's not very ideal for them to that.
-
They also decided to no longer hire servants, because they could no longer afford it.
-
-
Adam Patch is ill and it doesn't look like he's going to make it.
-
Anthony couldn't visit him, because the doctors instructed him not to.
-
-
One day when Anthony and Gloria were heading back from dinner at some restaurant, a cat passed by, and Anthony confessed he kicked a cat once.
-
Gloria, horrified, started crying because Anthony had went into graphic detail about inflicting such awfuk pain on this kitten, but Anthony started to assure her that he was kand never did such a thing. Gloria did not believe him though. "There had been something in the details he had chosen to describe that made her cry herself asleep that night, for the kitten, for Anthony, for herself, for the pain and bitterness and cruelt of all the world" (235).
-
-
Adam Patch had died.
-
After the buriel Anthony and Gloria waited patientally for some call concerning the status of the will. But they haven't gotten that call.
-
When Anthony calls up his grandfather's lawyer about being interested in the estate, the lawyer broke it down to him that he didn't mention his grandson on the will.
-
-
Anthony and Gloria file a lawsuit against the authenticity of the will.
-
They hire Mr. Haight to help them pull together their case.
-
We find out that Adam Patch had left Shuttlesworth (his assistant) in charge of the money, and gave some cash to charity and Adam Patch's distant cousins in Idaho.
-
Anthony tells Mr. Haight that he believes his grandfather disinherited him because of the party of the summer, and that's when Adam Patch began to work on his will.
-
Mr. Haight says this will be a hard case to win, but they would have to gather as much evidence as they can to propose Adam Patch was under "undue influence."
-
-
Anthony and Gloria end up moving to a smaller apartment.
-
Muriel comes for a visit, and she tells them all the rumors she's heard about Adam Patch and his grandson. She tells them that one of the outrageous ones was that Adam Patch had died at the party, and of course - Anthony and Gloria had gotten annoyed.
-
Muriel suggests that they have a child, but they both tell her they can't afford it, in which Muriel testifies and says that everyone in the slums has one.
-
Gloria and Anthony exchange a smile because this visit had brought them slightly together, but bottom line is -they never have a little Patch.
-
-
Anthony had gotten back into writing once again, and asked Dick for some advice in how to make money by writing literature. Dick tells him not to write a novel but to write popular short stories instead.
-
These short stories that Anthony would write would get rejected by dozens of editors. (Thanks fror the advice Dick.)
-
-
Gloria's father had passed away, so they went to Kansas City for the funeral.
-
Gloria confesses that she's a Bilphist and Anthony finds it funny that all of a sudden she believes in reincarnation when she's an agnostic in every sense of the word.
-
Anthony then tells her that the reason she believes in all of this is because she's "tired" and she is better off believing in something that can be demonstratable. Gloria disagrees with him and says she just wants happiness, not the truth.
-
-
Back at the apartment they long to party but they realize it's hard to afford throwing such bangers.
-
That doesn't stop them though, the money just keeps going somehow.
-
-
Bloeckman comes back to the city and Gloria asks Anthony once again if she should get into the movies so they can afford things again.
-
Anthony doesn't like the idea of living off her income if she does make it, but most of all - he doesn't like the idea of Bloeckman hanging out with his wife.
-
-
War was declared on Germany, so Dick, Maury, and Anthony apply for military camp.
-
Anthony's doctor did not pass him for cmp because something was wrong with his blood-pressure.
-
-
The Patch's third wedding anniversary had passed and this time they didn't celebrate it.
-
The lawsuit is still continuing, and it's sure taking a long time to get a trial.
-
Anthony and Gloria discuss about how happy and in love they will be again once they get the money.
-
Anthony ends up getting drafted for the fall, and the examining doctor made no mention of low blood-pressure in Anthony.
-
Anthony confesses to Gloria that above everything else, he wants to be killed, but according to the narrator this confession was purposeless.
-
-
The day Anthony left for camp Gloria had only arrived in time to catch his eye over an anxious crowd. They would be too far away from each other to see each other's tears.
