Book One: Chapter Two
-
There's a crispness in the air - a month has passed.
-
Every morning Anthony receives an invitation from some bacelorette looking for Anthony's companionship. In which, Anthony isn't particularly interested.
-
He then decides to go for a walk (cause being desirable is tough) and bumps into Richard "Dick" Caramel.
-
Their conversation is rather cold, but Dick suggests that Anthony should come with him to go meet his aunt, uncle, and cousin Gloria Gilbert. Then Dick boasts about Gloria's fame for going to college dances, being attractive and for being so "darn nice" but unfortunately, there's "not a brain in her head" (32). Anthony takes this a bit personal and criticizes Dick's taste in women, his knowledge, and his writing. This goes on for quite a bit, but eventually truce is called and Anthony and Dick walk to the Gilbert crib. (Hello MTV!)
-
While waiting for Gloria to come home, Mrs. Gilbert engages in a conversation with the two guys about her daughter's irresponsibility, her young mind, and the fact that she just "goes, and goes, and goes". Dick reassures his aunt that responsibility would spoil Gloria's beauty, but Mrs. Gilbert doesn't care. Eventually their time there is rather dragged and Gloria just never shows up, so the boys just pack it up and say adios.

Then the scene changes, and Anthony is now having a conversation with his friend Maury about going on a date with Geraldine.
-
Geraldine is known for having "stunts" as Maury calls it - saying "You cra-a-azy!" as her catchphrase, and blowing hair out of her face. She's kind of annoying, to be honest, but Anthony doesn't essentially care. He finds her interesting, and mentions that he thinks Dick should write about her, in which Maury disagrees.
-
Maury then tells Anthony about this young girl he had met at the tea gathering he went to last night and mentioned it was Dick's cousin (Gloria). He tells her that "she was tremendously alive. She was eating gum drops." (42).The both of them fan-girl in a way, discussing about how interesting and exciting Gloria is and how stupid Dick was for saying she has "no brain in her head." Then Maury says that Gloria genuinely has an old soul.
-
-
The next morning Anthony decides to invite Dick and Gloria for tea at his apartment.
-
Automatically Anthony was mesmerized by Gloria's beauty and her sort of rebellious charm ("I detest reformers, especially the sort who try to reform me.....It's 'Oh Gloria, if you smoke so many cigarettes you'll lose your pretty complextion!' and 'Oh, Gloria, why don't you marry and settle down?'" (53).)
-
It's important to note Gloria is like a flapper during this day and age, but a very early flapper.
-
-
Anthony also takes a look at her small, child-like hands, and automaticaly assumed she was nearly-eighteen.
-
Gloria, throughout this entire tea gathering, boasted about herself, being from Kansas City, Miss., and her reputation as being a desirable female.
-
-
Since their first time meeting each other, Gloria and Anthony had another tea date at the Plaza.
-
Gloria picks out some of the beautiful girls in the room, but Anthony couldn't really care, he goes, "I'd rather look at you". (54) (Yeah ok hot shot) (Smooth) (Nice pick-up line).
-
Anthony then asks Gloria how old she is, in which Gloria says she's twenty-two and hates being so. She goes on about how she doesn't want to marry and rather not have children of her own.
-
Then, Gloria pops another gum-drop in her mouth, and asks Anthony what he does for a living. In which Anthony tells her straight up that he does nothing because there's nothing worth doing (Deep...).and then tries to get Gloria into this engaging conversation about whether or not being lazy is wrong. Gloria doesn't answer, but tells him that she just wants to be lazy as well and sleep (I wholeheartedly agree sista.)
