Book Three: Chapter Three

  • A year has passed and Anthony and Gloria moved apartments because they could no longer afford the rent

  • Muriel decides to pay an unexpected visit and see's Anthony in the corner. asks if he can put some light on.

    • Anthony, when he rose, was described as being heavier now, "his stomach was a limp weight against his belt; his flesh had softened and expanded..." He's also thirty-two.

    • Muriel briefly mentions about getting a job because Anthony's lawsuit concerning his grandfather's will is taking so long, but Anthony refuses and gets downright offended by the thought of work, and also by the thought of being bothered by "friends" who have no desire in seeing him.

    • Gloria enters the room, gives Anthony a casual hello, but is far more happy to see Muriel at the apartment.

    • Also, we find out that Anthony and Maury no longer keep in touch since the argument.

    • Muriel asks if Anthony has been economizing, and Gloria laughs. Anthony is furious by this, and our loving couple have an argument right in front of Muriel concerning Anthony's spending habits on booze and being drunk a good percentage of the day. Anthony just leaves.

    • Gloria tells Muriel that even though Anthony seemed sober, he's actually drunk and far better with conversations when wasted than sober. He also leaves a lot, coming home at midnight and cries in Gloria's arms asking for forgiveness. Gloria just moves on from the situation.

  • Because of how tight the Patch's have to be about their spending habits, Anthony came to a decision that he has to cancel out one of his club memberships. This membership just so happens to be a membership to a club his grandfather was a part of, and so was his father.

  • We also find out that Anthony is a regular at Sammy's.

    • "But he hated to be sober. It made him conscious of the people around him, of that air of struggle, of greedy amition, of hope more sordid than despair, of incessant passage up or down..." (336).

  • Anthony had also bumped into Dick one day, and Dick noticed how tired Anthony was. Dick has been worried about the Patch's for quite the while, ever since he started hearing stories about them all the way in California when he was on business.

    • We also find out that Dick's writing career has been called mediocre by a lot of critics because he kept writing for films and not investing thoroughly on his own works, but Dick doesn't care about what the critics have to say.

  • One day Anthony couldn't afford getting a bottle of whiskey so he ran into the apartment yelling at Gloria for money (but of course, Gloria doesn't have much.)

    • Apparently his bank account closed down because there wasn't enough funds to keep the account active. And because a lot of checks kept getting bounced, the bank just had to get rid of the Patch account.

    • Gloria and Anthony decide to combine what they have left in their pockets, and Anthony decides he'll take the money, get a cab, and go pawn his watch just to get enough money to last them for a couple of days.

    • Gloria also mentions they should ask some friends for some cash, but Anthony gets all pissy about this idea and sarcastically suggests to call up Bloeckman (or...er...Black...). Gloria then tells Anthony that Bloeckman isn't interested anymore and that she discovered a year ago that his name is now Black. Anthony, of course, gets upset when he finds out his wife hid the fact of meeting up with Bloeckman (Black) one day, but his main concern was getting enough money to pay off a bottle he was planning on buying.

    • Of course, Anthony decides to first stop at Sammy's to get a couple of drinks before selling his watch, but this turned into drink after drink and Anthony just gets completely wasted, as usual.

    • Next thing you know, the pawn shop closes by the time Anthony leaves Sammy's, so now Anthony has to call up some people for favors. (And, if you remember in Book Two: Chapter One, Anthony told his grandfather he wasn't some sort of beggar.) (And here we are...oh the irony...)

    •  He decided, in the spur of the moment, to call up Black (Bloeckman) Bloeckman (Black) (Or however you prefer to call him) to ask for some money, but his assistant had told Anthony over the phone that he was at some party/dinner thing at this fancy place Anthony used to take Gloria to.

    • So Anthony goes to the address and decides to stay on the first floor of this fancy restaurant because he wasn't in proper attire. He then asks a waiter to get Joseph Black for him, as it's important.

    • Bloeckman shows up and asks Anthony what's important, but Anthony is just out-of-his-mind drunk and decides to call Bloeckman out for not giving his wife a part (which Bloeckman testifies) and then when Bloeckman tries to walk away from Anthony because Anthony keeps slurring his words, Anthony goes "Not so fast you Goddam Jew!" Bloeckman then tells Anthony to watch his mouth because clealry Bloeckman is getting heated, but Anthony wouldn't budge and repeated it again, and so (in retaliation) Bloeckman Mike Tyson'd the crap out of him (I mean it.)

    •  Kicked out into the street, some person gets Anthony a cab with them, and Anthony mentions that he's Adam Patch's grandson and he doesn't need of this trouble. But both passengers of this taxi don't have a penny to their name, and when it came to the fare the person had mentioned that Anthony offered to pay for the ride.

  • Finally, though, the hearing for their lawsuit came, and Gloria mentioned she'll met up with Anthony at the hearing with Dick.

    • Anthony, freaking out over this hearing, hears the doorbell ring a while after Gloria had gone out. When he opened it, it was Dot. (She baaaaaaaaack.)

  • Of course, Dot being in New York did not help Anthony at all, and he just kept yelling at her to get lost.

    • Dot, sobbing, kept professing her love for him and exclaimed "Hit me! Oh, hit me, and I'll kiss the hand hit me with!" (359). (Chill....)

    • Anthony, furious, starts telling her that he'll kill her, and kept going on and on about this "I will kill you!" for quite some time as he gets angrier by the minute. Then Anthony starts throwinfurniture all over the house, going absolutely insane.

  • When Gloria comes back to the house with Dick all excited because they won the case, she notices that the apartment is a mess and Anthony is locked in his room.

    • When they're about to open the door to tell Anthony about the millions they had just inherited, Anthony keeps telling them not to come in.

    • They don't abide by his orders and as soon as they open the door Dick criticizes Anthony by "going back to childhood" for looking at his stamp collection.

    • Now, I'm just gonna leave this right here..

    • "'Shut the door when you go out.' He spoke like a pert child. With a faint horror dawning in her eyes, Gloria gazed at him - 'Anthony!' she cried, 'what is it? What's the matter? Why didn't you come - why, what is it?' 'See here,' said Anthony softly, 'you two get out - now, both of you. Or else I'll tell my grandfather.' He held up a handful of stamps and let them come drifting down about him like leaves.." (360). HE'S GONE. HE LOST IT. RIP. NO ONE'S SAFE.

  • Now we're fast-fowarded to a couple months later, where Anthony is in a wheel-chair aboarded some ship, and people around him are gossiping at how crazy he had gotten when he inherited all of his grandfather's money. Also, Adam Patch's friend, Shuttlesworth, a religious reformer, had shot himself when Anthony won the suit. They also briefly talk about Gloria, and how dyed and unclean she is now, and how she's not bad-looking.

  • Anthony, staring into the ocean, realizes his win, and how he proved everyone else wrong about him being able to fit in the social norm of finding work. "'I showed them,' he was saying. 'It was a hard fight, but I didn't give up and I came through!' (361).
